How do I join Winona State bowling team?
First you must be accepted to Winona State University. To apply to the university go to www.winona.edu
I have been accepted to Winona State University, now what?
If you have not already contacted someone from the team with questions you may do so now for more information. Also in the first week of the fall semester Winona State holds a club fair. The bowling club always has a booth where the team captains will be present to answer any questions. It is however HIGHLY recommended you fill out the contact form or contact [email protected] before the start of the school year.
What skill level bowlers do you recruit?
The Winona State Bowling Team does not turn away anyone interested in competing. But this is a highly competitive team in a very competitive world of college bowling. Also it is to be noted that budget constraints keep us to taking a certain number of bowlers to each tournament. This number is constantly changing but we feel 7 is a good number of players at each tournament. Sometimes this can be changed to 8. So this means that not every bowler can be taken if we have a surplus of people wanting to compete.
Who is eligible to bowl?
Anyone in good academic standing and taking a minimum of 12 credit hours is eligible to bowl. The United States Bowling Congress requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Anyone meeting this GPA and taking a full course load of 12 credit hours may be eligible to compete.
Does it cost anything to bowl?
While many bowling teams across the country require bowlers to pay a tryout fee or due, or a club fee or due, the Winona State Bowling Team does not. Many teams charge from 50 up to 800 dollars PER YEAR for a bowler to compete. Here at Winona State you will have two items that cost you money throughout your career. One is your jerseys. Winona State Bowling wears High 5 Gear jerseys that are very high in quality and make our team one of the best dressed teams on the lanes. These two jerseys must be purchased by the participant at the beginning of there collegiate career. The cost is approximately 130.00 dollars. Once paid however the bowler will be able to wear these jerseys all four years and keep them after he or she graduates. The second cost is during the school year a bowler must pay 40 dollars to be able to practice for the entire school year. The practice is conducted on challenging sport conditions to better the team for competition.
So what is paid for by the university?
With the budget given to us by Winona State University the team is capable of covering many costs. All sanctioning and tournament entry fees are paid for by the university. As well as transportation costs (gas expenses) and hotel costs. So besides the costs outlined above, a student will only be responsible for his or her food on bowling weekends.
Are scholarships offered?
The Winona State Bowling Team does not offer scholarships to its members. The budget given to us by the university is used for all the things listed above and is almost always at the 0 mark at the end of the year. However Winona State University is continually ranked a best university for your money.
How often does the team practice?
The team currently practices twice a week for two hours each session, for a total of four hours per week. We do however understand that our team members are STUDENTS first, and therefore if a team member must miss practice to study for an exam or finish a paper they will be allowed to do so.
